Artist Statement

I was born in one of the most patriarchal cities in China, Fujian. The central theme of my work has always been how people grow and survive in this society and world. By reinterpreting traditional Eastern culture, I express my concern and personal analysis of the living environment as well as the state of women.

I have mixed feelings about China. On the one hand, it is the country where I was born and raised, and I used to love it deeply and have many good memories. On the other hand, after seeing the wider world, I realized that it is not as wonderful as I thought it would be. It is even a sin to be born as a woman in some parts of the country. They may be aborted, abandoned, or even killed. These complex feelings grew in my mind, fought, merged, and finally became the subject of my work. Most of my inspirations are rooted in my personal life and my daily surroundings. I take women from different socioeconomic classes as objects of my expression to show the life of women in Chinese society. Through the fusion of traditional Chinese art, a world is constructed that incorporates different concepts of time, memory, and the changing emotional state of my inner world. I am exploring women's lives that have changed in response to the evolving Chinese social, political and cultural debates.

I live in the crowd and notice many soul-touching and unspeakable human interactions.  My painting tells stories about human sensitivity, vulnerability, dignity, division, helplessness, sincerity, and love. Surviving in this complex society, all people are driven by their emotions. They become the themes of my works. By reinterpreting traditional Eastern culture and observing the society around me, I try to create works that cross different cultural barriers.
