Artist Statement
I work primarily with digital media, creating illustrations that are influenced by pop cultures such as webcomics, series, and movies. Some genres that have influenced these illustrations include romance and slice-of-life. I find the connections we make with others or ourselves interesting, because rather than an extrovert who interacts with others, as an introvert I tend to observe how people treat each other. Meanwhile, I also tend to self-reflect on my mental and emotional growth and experiences.
My process for the work starts with me listening to a mix of pop culture music genres that I connect with personally such as Rhythm and Blues. The lyrics of these songs help me envision a scenario. Furthermore, when listening to music, melody helps me convey emotion or mood with the use of color and lighting. I create several sketches for the idea in mind while changing perspective, angles, or adjusting proportions. For example, Amour Propre illustrates a female figure surrounded by a field of white flowers. The sun wraps around her body as she embraces nature and its warmth. Another example, First Thing You See, depicts a female figure looking at the viewer as she awakens in bed. Her hair falls over her face, the sunlight illuminating the warmth in her eyes. This process in the end creates a narrative that the viewer may relate to through the use of color, lighting, and symbolism. Thus, exploring the connections we have with not only other people but with ourselves.
